What is Ujjain Bhasma Aarti?

As the name suggests, the Shiva lingam is dipped in holy Bhasma (or ashes) every morning during the ceremony. This tradition is deeply symbolic as it shows the eternal cycle of life and death. This cycle symbolises the function of Lord Shiva in Hindu mythology. During this ceremony, ashes are used to highlight the transformative power of Shiva as the Lord of destruction and restoration. It highlights the eternal nature of the soul and the passing of the soul. Along with connecting the holy nature of Lord Shiva and his followers, Bhasma Aarti reminds us of the endless spiritual journey of life.

Why is Bhasma Aarti Famous?

The Bhasma Aarti is a time-bound, complex ritual that needs accuracy, focus, quality, and devotion. Preparations are made in the early morning for this ceremony. The priests in the temple wear traditional attire and prepare the offerings for the ritual, such as the holy ash or Bhasma. Aarti is performed by collecting ashes of cow dung cakes after burning them. Legends had it that Bhasma was collected from the crematorium in ancient times. The ash is cleansed before using in the ceremony. This ash symbolises the essence of life and how fire plays a vital role in both creation and demise. At Mahakal Temple, the Bhasma Aarti is an extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime experience due to various factors –

  • Bhasma Aarti is performed in the calmness of early morning. Devotees feel inner peace in this peaceful environment. They can build a deep connection with themselves and reflect on their presence.
  • The use of holy ash is something that differentiates Aarti from other ceremonies. It reminds people of their spiritual journey and briefness of life. Offering the ash is a life-changing and purifying experience for every devotee who attends the Aarti.
  • The Mahakal temple is itself a source of energy for devotees of Lord Shiva. The vibrations that come from chants, the strength of the ceremony itself, and the energy in the temple produce both spiritual and energising environments. Many devotees had transformative and life-changing experiences with the Bhasma Aarti.

Importance of Bhasma Aarti

Also known as Bholenath (the innocent god), Lord Shiva is known to have conquered destructive forces and demons and received their ashes for cleansing in ancient mythology. Since the ancient era, this ritual has become a custom. It improves the reputation of Shiva as the ultimate force to destroy the material world, along with negativity, ignorance, and ego. Lord Shiva resides here as Mahakal, which symbolises death, transformation, and time. The Bhasma Aarti reminds us of these realities and symbolises the short duration of life and death of all living beings. It shows that everything goes back to where it comes from.
