Orchha is a small, quiet town on the banks of the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh. It was once the capital of the Bundela kings. Today it is full of old palaces, tall temples and royal tombs called chhatris. It is also famous for the Ram Raja Temple, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king.
Orchha is only about 16 km from Jhansi, and many people visit it on the way to Khajuraho. This guide tells you what to see, in simple words. To add Orchha to a Khajuraho trip, see our Khajuraho tour packages.
Orchha: Quick Facts
Places to Visit in Orchha
1. Ram Raja Temple
This is the most loved place in Orchha. Here, Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, not only as a god. Police give him a guard of honour every day, like a real king. The story says the queen of Orchha brought the idol from Ayodhya, and it would not move from the palace where she first kept it. So the palace became a temple.
- Entry: free
- Timing: morning and evening darshan (the temple closes for a few hours in the afternoon)
2. Orchha Fort Complex
The fort is on an island in the Betwa River, joined to the town by an old bridge. Inside are three main palaces:
- Raja Mahal: the king's palace, with bright old paintings on the walls and ceilings.
- Jahangir Mahal: a grand palace built to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir. It mixes Bundela and Mughal styles. The view from the top is wonderful.
- Sheesh Mahal: once a palace, now a hotel run by MP Tourism.
There is also Rai Praveen Mahal, built for a famous poet and dancer of the court.
3. Chaturbhuj Temple
This is a very tall temple on a high platform, right next to the Ram Raja Temple. It was built for Lord Vishnu. You can climb up to the roof for a great view of the whole town.
4. Lakshmi Narayan Temple
This temple is on a small hill. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with colourful old paintings of gods, battles and daily life.
5. Chhatris on the Betwa
The chhatris are tall memorials of the Bundela kings, along the bank of the Betwa River at Kanchan Ghat. They look most beautiful at sunset, when you see them from across the river.
6. Phool Bagh
A garden near the Ram Raja Temple. It has a cool underground room and old water channels that kept the summer palace cool.
7. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary and Betwa River
Across the river is a small forest with birds, monkeys and deer. You can also go rafting or kayaking on the Betwa in the right season.
8. Light and Sound Show at Orchha Fort
In the evening, a light and sound show at the fort tells the story of the Bundela kings.
