Each zone has its own water holes and its own tigers.

Bandhavgarh is split into safari zones. Your safari permit is for one zone only. You cannot move to another zone during the safari.

So the zone you pick matters a lot. This guide tells you about every zone in simple words, so you can pick the right one.

Core Zone and Buffer Zone: What Is the Difference?

  • Core zone: the main forest of the national park. It has the most tigers. The number of jeeps is fixed, so seats sell out fast.
  • Buffer zone: the forest around the core zone. Villages and farms are close by. It is easier to book, and tigers are seen here too.

If you get a core zone, great. If not, a buffer zone is a good second choice. Do not cancel your trip.

  • Why go: many famous tigers lived here, and sightings are often good.
  • Special stop: Shesh Shaiya, a big stone statue of Lord Vishnu lying on a snake.
  • Good to know: it is the first zone to sell out. Book as early as you can.

Magadhi Zone

Magadhi has open grassland, bamboo and water holes. Animals come out into the open, so they are easy to see.

  • Why go: very good tiger sightings, and many deer and gaur.
  • Good to know: it is the second most popular zone. It also sells out early.

Khitauli Zone

Khitauli is the quietest core zone. It has fewer jeeps, thick forest and many birds.

  • Why go: a calm safari, good photos and less dust from other jeeps.
  • Good to know: the Khitauli gate is not in Tala village. Check how far your hotel is from it.

Buffer Zones: Panpatha, Dhamokhar and Johila

Every zone has its own gate. Your permit tells you which one.

The buffer zones are a smart choice when core seats are full.

  • Panpatha: the most popular buffer zone. Tigers are seen here quite often.
  • Dhamokhar: quiet, with fewer jeeps and a nice forest drive.
  • Johila: a peaceful zone, good for a slow and calm safari.

Buffer zone safaris usually cost a little less than core zone safaris.

Which Zone Should You Book?

  • First safari? Book Tala or Magadhi.
  • Love photos and birds? Try Khitauli.
  • Core zones full? Book Panpatha. It is the best buffer zone for tigers.
  • Doing 3 or 4 safaris? Mix zones. For example: Tala + Magadhi + Khitauli + Panpatha.

Each zone has different tigers. So more zones give you more chances.

Where to Stay for Each Zone

  • For Tala and Magadhi: stay in or near Tala village. Most hotels are here.
