Winter in Kanha (October to February)

Barasingha in the open meadows of Kanha in winter
Winter mornings bring mist over the meadows and lakes.
  • Weather: Days around 22 to 28°C. Mornings can drop close to 0°C in December and January, and open jeeps feel freezing.
  • Why go: Comfortable days, misty meadows, big herds of deer and barasingha, and lots of birds.
  • Tigers: Seen, but the forest is thicker, so sightings take a little more luck.
  • Crowds: Busy around Diwali, Christmas and New Year.
  • Carry: A heavy jacket, cap, gloves and a shawl for morning safaris.

Summer in Kanha (March to June)

  • Weather: Warm in March, very hot in May and June, often above 40°C.
  • Why go: The best time for tigers. Small water sources dry up, so animals come to the remaining waterholes, and the dry forest makes them easier to spot.
  • Also see: Bright red flame-of-the-forest flowers in March and clear views across the forest.
  • Crowds: Busy in May during school holidays. March and April are calmer.
  • Carry: A cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, light cotton clothes and water.

Monsoon in Kanha (July to September)

  • Core zones: Closed (Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi).
  • Buffer zones: Khatia, Khapa and Sijhora stay open all year.
  • Why go: A lush green forest, very few tourists and lower hotel rates.
  • Keep in mind: Some tracks get muddy, and sightings are fewer than in summer.

Why Is Kanha National Park So Famous?

Kanha is one of India's most loved wildlife parks. Here's why:

  • Tigers: An estimated 135 to 140 tigers live in Kanha Tiger Reserve.
  • Barasingha: It's the only natural home of the hard-ground barasingha, which Kanha saved from near extinction.
  • Open meadows: Its wide grasslands make wildlife easier to see than in thick forests.
  • The Jungle Book: The forests of this region are often linked with Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
  • Well managed: Kanha is known as one of the best-managed tiger reserves in Asia.
  • Rich wildlife: Leopards, gaur, wild dogs, sloth bears and around 300 kinds of birds. See all the Kanha National Park animals.
