Here's something most first-time visitors don't know: Kanha is so big that its gates are up to 2 to 3 hours apart. Pick the wrong gate, and you'll spend your holiday in a car instead of a jeep.
This simple guide explains every Kanha gate, which zones it covers and how to choose the right one for your trip.
Kanha Gates: Short List
| Gate | District | Core zones you can enter | Buffer zone | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khatia Gate | Mandla | Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, Sarhi | Khatia | First-timers, most hotels, easy from Jabalpur |
| Mukki Gate | Balaghat | Kanha, Kisli, Mukki | Khapa | Tiger lovers, quiet luxury stays, easy from Raipur and Gondia |
| Sarhi Gate | Mandla | Kanha, Kisli, Sarhi | Sijhora | Fewer jeeps, a calm safari |
| Phen Gate | Mandla | Phen Wildlife Sanctuary | Explorers who want something different |
Important: With a full jeep booking, you can often reach more than one zone from a gate, as shown above. With a single seat booking, always report to the exact gate printed on your permit.
Khatia Gate: The Main Gate
Khatia gate is on the western side of the park, in Mandla district. It's the busiest and most popular entry point, and the one most visitors use.
- Zones: You can reach all four core zones from here (Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi), plus the Khatia buffer zone. Kisli zone starts right after the gate.
- Stays: The largest choice of hotels, from budget rooms to jungle resorts.
- Getting there: About 160 km from Jabalpur (around 4 hours) and about 50 km from Nainpur railway station.
- Good to know: Many people call it the "Kisli gate" because Kisli zone begins here, but Kisli is the zone and Khatia is the gate.
Mukki Gate: The South Gate

Mukki gate is on the southern side of Kanha, in Balaghat district. It's calmer than Khatia, and wildlife lovers like it a lot.
- Zones: Mukki, Kanha and Kisli core zones, plus the Khapa buffer zone.
- Why people love it: Mukki zone has a good network of forest roads, strong tiger sightings in summer and swampy meadows where barasingha are often seen.
- Stays: Fewer but very good resorts, including luxury lodges like Banjaar Tola (Taj). See our list of resorts near Kanha National Park.
- Getting there: About 15 km from Baihar town, about 65 km from Balaghat, about 125 km from Gondia (around 3 hours) and about 210 to 225 km from Raipur (around 5 hours).
Sarhi Gate: The Quiet East Gate
Sarhi gate is on the eastern side of the park, near Bichhiya in Mandla district.
- Zones: Sarhi core zone, plus Kanha and Kisli, and the Sijhora buffer zone.
- Why go: Sarhi has fewer roads and fewer jeeps, so it feels quiet and wild. The route also passes through part of Kisli, so you often see two zones in one safari.
- Stays: Very few hotels close by, so most visitors stay near Khatia and drive about 1.5 hours.
Phen Gate: A Small Separate Sanctuary
Phen gate leads into Phen Wildlife Sanctuary, a small protected forest that joins Kanha Tiger Reserve. It's quiet, rarely crowded and good for people who have already done the main zones. It's best reached from the Mukki side.
How Far Are the Gates From Each Other?
| From | To | Approx. distance | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khatia Gate | Mukki Gate | About 50 km | 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Khatia Gate | Sarhi Gate | About 55 to 60 km | 1.5 hours |
| Mukki Gate | Sarhi Gate | About 90 to 100 km | 2 to 2.5 hours |
That's why your hotel should be near your gate. A 6 AM safari at Mukki is very hard if you're staying near Sarhi.
Which Kanha Gate Should You Choose?
| If you... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Are visiting Kanha for the first time | Khatia |
| Are coming from Jabalpur, Delhi or Bhopal | Khatia |
| Are coming from Raipur, Gondia or Hyderabad | Mukki |
| Want a quiet, luxury jungle stay | Mukki |
| Want fewer jeeps and a quiet safari | Sarhi |
| Are on a budget and want more hotel choices | Khatia |
| Can't get core zone seats | Any gate's buffer zone (open all year) |
What Happens at the Gate?
- Reach 30 to 45 minutes early. The gate opens at sunrise for the morning safari.
- Permit and ID check. Every visitor must show the original ID used during booking.
- Jeep and guide allotment. A forest guide joins your jeep.
- Entry in a line. Jeeps enter one by one when the gate opens.
For exact safari slots each month, see our Kanha safari timings.
Tip: Buffer zones near the gates also run safaris through the year, including in the monsoon, and some offer night safaris. Ask about these if the core zones are full.
