A Little History

Pachmarhi gets its name from the five ancient Pandav Caves ("panch" means five, "marhi" means caves). Local legend says the Pandavas stayed here during their exile.

The modern town began in 1857, when Captain James Forsyth of the British Army spotted the plateau from what is now called Priyadarshini Point. The British later developed Pachmarhi as a summer retreat and army station. You can still see that history in Christ Church, the old bungalows and the cantonment area.

  • March to June: Popular with families escaping the heat. Warm days, pleasant evenings.

Getting Around

Pachmarhi town is small and easy to walk around. For sightseeing, you'll need a forest-registered Gypsy, because private cars are not allowed into most forest areas. Gypsies run on fixed routes with set rates. Book through your hotel, your tour operator or the official Gypsy counter in town.

Where to Stay

Pachmarhi has options for every budget:

  • Budget: Simple guesthouses and lodges near the market and bus stand.
  • Mid-range: Comfortable hotels and resorts, many with gardens and hill views.
  • Premium: Heritage bungalows and resort properties with large grounds and a quieter setting.

Whatever you choose, book early for weekends, summer holidays, Diwali, Christmas and New Year. Rooms fill up quickly.

What to Eat

Pachmarhi isn't a food destination, but you'll eat well. Most restaurants serve North Indian thalis, simple local food and snacks. Try hot poha and jalebi for breakfast, bhutta (roasted corn) by the lake in the evening, and hot chai at the viewpoints. Local honey and herbal products from the forest are worth picking up too.
