Bandhavgarh National Park: Quick Facts
Where Is Bandhavgarh National Park?
Bandhavgarh National Park is in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, in central India. It sits in the Vindhya hills.
The main entry point is Tala village. The Tala and Magadhi zone gates are near Tala, and most hotels and resorts are also here.
Nearby towns:
- Umaria: the nearest railway station, about 35 km away.
- Katni: a big railway junction, about 95 to 100 km away.
- Jabalpur: the nearest big airport and city, about 4 to 5 hours by road.
Why Is Bandhavgarh Famous?
- Tigers. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest numbers of tigers for its size in India. Many visitors see a tiger in their first few safaris.
- The old fort. Bandhavgarh Fort stands on a high hill in the middle of the park. People believe it is about 2,000 years old.
- The first white tiger. Mohan, the famous white tiger, was found in this area in 1951 by the Maharaja of Rewa.
- Famous tigers. Tigers like Charger and Sita made Bandhavgarh well known around the world.
The name comes from the fort. "Bandhav" means brother and "garh" means fort. A local story says Lord Ram gave this fort to his brother Lakshman.
National Park or Tiger Reserve: What Is the Difference?
You will see both names. Here is the simple answer:
- Bandhavgarh National Park is the main protected forest. It became a national park in 1968.
- Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is the bigger area. It became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1993. It has the national park (the core zone) plus the forest around it (the buffer zone).
The whole tiger reserve covers about 1,500 sq km. For a visitor, both names mean the same place.
